Research Interests
I have conducted extensive academic research that examines the characteristics of organizations that implement enterprise risk management and how investors in the marketplace value the embrace by organizations of ERM processes.
Recent/Past Research
Over the past several years my research has focused on enterprise risk management. When the ERM Initiative started at NC State I believed it was important to support the Initiative with academic research. This has led to several co-authored research papers, grants, and research awards. Working with both Mark Beasley and Richard Warr, I have authored a series of articles that have examined four important issues surrounding ERM.
- What types of firms adopt ERM practices
- What is the market reaction to firms’ announcements of the adoption of ERM
- Does the adoption of ERM affect firms’ performance
- Does the adoption of ERM affect firms’ reputation
Currently, I also have ongoing research projects that examine the impact of integrating an organization’s ERM processes with its focus on sustainability. In addition, my current projects examine the long-term performance of companies adopting enterprise risk management programs, ERM’s effect on M&A activity in the financial industry, and risk appetite.
Experience with Industry
Working with ERM advisory board members during board meetings, round tables, and executive training has been incredibly helpful to my teaching. Understanding how professionals understand and implement risk management processes provides a real understanding of the complexity of ERM.
Why Students May Want to Study Risk and Analytics
I believe that risk and analytics will continue to demand significant attention from companies that want to lead and be successful. Students who want challenging and exciting careers will find positions in risk and analytics rewarding.
