Experience with industry
While I have had various roles over my career, risk management has been the common thread through all of them. This includes my roles in public accounting, internal audit and regulatory compliance. I have worked for three large academic research I institutions as well as Chiquita Brands International, a global public pharmaceutical company and started my career at EY LLP. I have also done consulting with nonprofit organizations in the areas of governance and financial management.
All of my classes incorporate insights from real world events to help students appreciate the challenges, as well as opportunities, that risk management professionals are facing in order to be strategic and remain competitive in today’s environment.
Not only do I incorporate examples from my career into the classroom, but I also seek to leverage current business problems and have students apply the course concepts to identify solutions. Similar to the real-world, students find that there is rarely one straight-forward answer.
Working with Risk and Analytics students
While most of my teaching is online, I am lucky in that I get an opportunity to know many of my students during my classes and keep in touch afterwards. I always appreciate when a student tells me how they have been able to apply something from class to their current role, or they let me know they are changing jobs because they feel more comfortable and knowledgeable in the risk management realm to seek out new opportunities. All of my students mention they feel more prepared when communicating with senior leaders and board members, both in writing and in doing a formal presentation. These are essential skills that I emphasize in all my courses.
Why Choose the Master of Management, Risk and Analytics (MRA)?
The aspects of risk management apply to any type of business, industry and at all levels of an organization. All organizations have various types of risks and more data than they can get their hands around. And if you were to ask any organization, most would say the volume of risks and the complexity of those risks have increased. For that reason, risk management is becoming a core competency for anyone interested in moving into a management position. Increasingly, companies are looking for leaders with risk management skills and the ability to analyze and make sense of large volumes of data.
