Faculty Spotlight: Ericka F. Kranitz

What inspired you to pursue a career in risk management?

I have been involved with the NC State ERM Initiative in some manner since its inception 20 years ago. While I have had various roles over my career, risk management has been the common thread through all of them. This includes public accounting, internal audit, regulatory compliance as well as my academic interests. 

In my academic role, I am fortunate to be able to share my experiences and lessons learned with my students through the courses I teach, as well as my personal interactions. I incorporate real-world events into every class, which is not difficult given the dynamic environment organizations face every day. 

This is what makes risk management so exciting! It is constantly changing, and students will find it a challenging environment. Organizations are impacted every day by local, national and/or global events, providing a tremendous amount of current and future opportunities in every industry at all levels of the company.  

Share a memorable teaching moment or experience that significantly impacted one or more students.

While most of my teaching is online, I am lucky in that I get an opportunity to know many of my students during and beyond my classes. I always appreciate when a student tells me how they have been able to apply something from class to their current role, or they let me know they are changing jobs because they feel more comfortable and knowledgeable in the risk management realm to seek out new opportunities. All of my students — accounting (MAC), risk and analytics (MRA) and business administration (MBA) — mention they feel more prepared when communicating with senior leaders and board members, both in writing and in doing a formal presentation. These are essential skills that I emphasize in all my courses. 

How do you stay current in your field and bring that knowledge into the classroom?

I read the Wall Street Journal every day and receive regular emails from McKinsey focusing on risk management, strategy and essential CEO leadership skills. Of course, I also use the ERM Initiative’s research reports and thought pieces which are valuable sources of information. 

All of my classes incorporate insights from these resources to help students appreciate the challenges, as well as opportunities, that risk management professionals are facing in order to be strategic and remain competitive in today’s environment. 

What advice do you have for students interested in pursuing a career in risk management?

As you explore career opportunities, interview people who are currently in the roles and at companies you find interesting. Ask them about their career journey,  how they got to their current position and what they like most about their job. Also, ask them for advice for entering the particular industry and profession. 

Outside of teaching and executive education, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

I love to read and try to exercise every day. It’s important for me to spend time with family to help re-energize and enjoy some downtime whenever possible.
